How to display Wakeup popup for Idle Users

In this article we are going to explore on how we can display a simple wakeup popup for Idle users ( lets say 1 minute for now).

We will be using Inactive Logout for WordPress plugin for enabling this functionality. So, go ahead and download the plugin and activate it on your site first to get started.

The need for a Wakeup Popup

To describe this functionality – It is almost the same as how you get a popup after inactivity in 9gag.com after certain duration. The need for this might depend on your choice but in general here below are some of points to note.

User Engagement: Keeps users aware of their session status and encourages them to stay active.

Security: Warns users of impending logout due to inactivity, preventing unauthorized access.

User Experience: Maybe just trigger a popup for fun and let your users know that they have been snoozing off.

Now, that we know all the not so important things. Let’s make this functional in our WordPress site.

Configuring Wakeup popup for Idle Users

Like I said above that we will be using Inactive Logout for WordPress plugin for enabling this functionality. So, go ahead and download the plugin if you have not and activate it as well.

  • Goto wp-admin page
  • Then navigate to Settings > Inactive Logout page
  • Search for an option called “Show Popup Message Only” here and enable this setting as highlighted in below screenshot.
Wake Up settings page
  • Choose your option to show the popup to only authenticated users or both logged in and not logged in users.
  • You’re done!

Now all you have to do is wait out 1 minute in our case to see the wakeup popup. This does not log out the user but just shows the popup. Below screenshot is an example of how it would look.
